How Long Does It Really Take To Insulate A House?

You nailed it with the “roll of the dice” part. Every time I estimate a job on an old house, I feel like I should just bring a magic 8-ball instead of a calendar. Last winter, I opened up a wall and found a stash of marbles and a petrified sandwich - guess someone’s lunch break never ended. And yeah, blown-in cellulose is my go-to for these places too. It’s not pretty, but it gets into all those weird cavities that nobody’s touched since the Hoover administration.

Spray foam... I’ve had it expand right out of the stud bay and glue a hammer to the floor. Still not sure how that happened. I hear folks swear by it, but unless you’re working in new construction or have everything masked off like a crime scene, it’s just asking for trouble.

The flex duct thing is spot on. I’ve pulled out enough soggy, moldy flex to fill a dumpster. Rigid’s more work up front, but at least you don’t get that “rain indoors” surprise later.
