Green board in the news - worth the hype for bathrooms?

Green board’s definitely easier on the back, but I just can’t bring myself to trust it behind a shower or tub. Maybe I’m paranoid after seeing a few too many “mystery leaks” in rentals over the years... That being said, those foam panels are wild - super light, cut like butter, and no dust clouds. I tried Wedi once for a flip and yeah, it’s pricier up front, but man, it saved me hours (and a chiropractor visit). The waterproofing is built-in too, which is one less thing to mess up.

Honestly, if you’re planning to hold onto the place long-term or want to avoid callbacks, foam’s not hype - it’s just the modern way to do it. But if you’re flipping or on a tight budget, green board with a good membrane might be fine. Just don’t skip the membrane... learned that the hard way when “moisture resistant” turned into “mold party.”

I hear you on the “moisture resistant” turning into “mold party” - been there, ripped that out. Green board just isn’t up to the job in a wet zone, no matter what the label says. I’m all-in on foam panels for showers now. The price stings, but it’s nothing compared to redoing a failed wall later. If you’re set on green board, at least go overboard with the membrane and double-check every seam... water finds a way, trust me.

Man, I totally get where you’re coming from about cement board being a pain. Dragging those heavy sheets up the stairs nearly did me in last year. I keep wondering if the weight savings and built-in waterproofing actually justify shelling out twice (or more) what you’d pay for cement board.

As for green board with a liquid membrane, I’ve seen a few folks online swear by it, but it honestly makes me nervous. I mean, green board is still just drywall with a little extra moisture resistance, right? If water ever gets behind the membrane or you get a bad seam, isn’t it just gonna turn into mush eventually? At that point, feels like you’d be better off biting the bullet and using cement board, even if it’s a hassle.

Still, I get tempted every time I see those “budget-friendly” solutions pop up on YouTube.
