Have you tried putting a bowl of baking soda in the closet?

Dehumidifier’s the only thing that’s really worked for me, honestly. Baking soda’s fine for mild odors, but it doesn’t tackle the root issue. I get what you mean about the cost, but if your place is old like mine, it’s worth every penny. And yes, the frizz is relentless—humidity just does that, no matter what products I try.

I totally get the dehumidifier thing—had to cave and buy one after my third closet overhaul. Here’s what I did: emptied the closet, wiped everything down with vinegar (smells weird but works), then ran the dehumidifier for a few days straight. It actually made a difference. Baking soda just felt like putting a band-aid on a leaky pipe, you know? As for the hair... still searching for a miracle there.

Moldy closets are the bane of my existence, honestly. I tried the baking soda trick too—felt like I was just sprinkling hope around and waiting for disappointment. Vinegar’s got that weird “salad bar in a closet” vibe, but it does seem to do the trick. I’m always torn between wanting to go full-on with the dehumidifier and worrying about the electricity bill creeping up. Ended up getting one of those smaller, energy-saving models on sale last winter, and it’s been running in shifts ever since. Not perfect, but better than nothing.

One thing I noticed: if I leave even a single damp towel or pair of shoes in there, it’s like an open invitation for mold to move back in. Now I’m paranoid about what goes in after laundry day. Sometimes I wonder if those moisture absorber packs (the ones that look like giant silica gel packets) are worth it? They’re cheaper upfront, but you have to keep replacing them... which adds up.

As for hair—ugh, humidity is relentless. My partner swears by sleeping with a silk pillowcase and using leave-in conditioner, but my hair just laughs at any attempt to tame it. If anyone ever invents a budget-friendly miracle product for frizz that actually works in this climate, they deserve a medal.

Anyway, glad I’m not the only one who feels like they’re fighting a losing battle with both closets and hair. At least vinegar is cheap, right?

I get the appeal of those moisture absorber packs, but honestly, have you tried just leaving the closet door cracked open? Sometimes airflow does more than any packet or gadget. I know it’s not always practical, but it’s made a difference for me. Also, about vinegar—yeah, it works, but I’ve found hydrogen peroxide less smelly and just as effective for spot cleaning mold.

As for hair, I’m with you—humidity wins every time. But “my hair just laughs at any attempt to tame it”—same here. Ever tried a ceiling fan in the bedroom at night? Helps with both air and hair... sort of.

I’ve definitely tried the “just leave the door open” trick, and you’re right, it helps—until someone (usually me) forgets and shuts it again. I swear, the second that door’s closed for a day, the musty smell creeps right back in. Hydrogen peroxide is a good call, though. I used to be all about vinegar, but my partner complained about the lingering scent, so I switched it up. Peroxide seems to do the job without making the whole room smell like a salad.

As for the hair situation, ceiling fan is a solid move. I’ve also started running a dehumidifier in the bedroom during the worst months. It’s not a miracle cure, but it does seem to help with both the closet funk and the frizz. Anyone else notice their clothes actually feel less damp when they do that? Or am I just imagining things?
