Water stains below an exterior outlet after rain

Staining below an exterior wall outlet can be hard to trace: water might be getting in at the outlet’s exterior seal, traveling from another spot higher up, or coming from a different moisture source. What observations would help narrow down the path?

Does the timing matter if the stain appears after wind-driven rain but not during dry weather? I’d also look at how the outlet sits relative to siding seams and nearby trim. If there’s damp insulation, corrosion around the box, or softened sheathing, would that change when you’d open the wall or call a qualified contractor? I wouldn’t want to assume a bead of caulk had fixed it without knowing where the water was coming from.

Damp insulation or corrosion at the outlet would make this more urgent: water near electrical parts can be hazardous, so I’d avoid using the outlet until it’s assessed. Softened sheathing also points to damage beyond the surface and deserves prompt investigation, though it doesn’t show where the water entered. I’d push back on opening the wall as the automatic next step; a qualified contractor can assess whether that’s needed.
