If you’re like me and get stuck staring at the wall (literally) trying to decide which trim material to use, here’s a little trick: grab a scrap of each—wood, MDF, and PVC—and leave them in your garage for a week. You’ll see pretty quick how they handle humidity and dings. I found MDF swells up if it gets even a whiff of moisture, but it paints super smooth. Wood is classic but can warp if your house is old and drafty like mine. PVC is basically indestructible but sometimes looks a bit too “plastic-y” for my taste. I usually go with wood for visible areas and PVC in bathrooms or basements where water’s an issue. Anyone else have a weird combo or a hack for making MDF last longer? Curious what tricks you all use to pick the right stuff.

I’ve had similar issues with MDF, especially in rentals where tenants aren’t always careful about water spills. Wood’s definitely easier to patch up, but I’ve noticed PVC can look a bit “plasticky” in older homes. Has anyone tried painting PVC to match original trim? Curious how well that holds up over time...
