Title: My House Is Getting Smarter Than Me, And It's Kinda Weird

Painter’s tape is a classic move. I’ve used sticky notes in a pinch—woke up with one stuck to my forehead once, so that was a look. The blinking lights are relentless though. It’s like every device is trying to outdo the others for attention. I swear my router’s blue LED could guide planes in on a foggy night.

Honestly, I miss the days when “high tech” meant a clunky beige box humming quietly in the corner. Sure, it looked like something from an old office supply closet, but at least it didn’t try to turn your bedroom into a rave at 2am. Now it’s all sleek black plastic and glowing rings of doom.

I’ve tried those little blackout stickers you can buy online—works better than tape if you want to get fancy, but then I forget which button does what and end up pressing everything until something beeps at me. There’s probably a smart solution for this, but then that would just mean another gadget...with another light.

Funny thing is, all this “smart” stuff is supposed to make life easier, but half the time I’m crawling under furniture trying to unplug something that’s decided to update itself at midnight. Maybe we need a new design trend: stealth tech. Hide the gadgets behind plants or inside fake books or something.

Anyway, if anyone figures out how to get their smart speaker to stop glowing every time someone walks by the hallway, let me know...or maybe don’t—I’m starting to think ignorance really was bliss back when all we had were beige boxes and tangled cords.

I hear you on the glowing gadgets—my living room looks like a low-budget sci-fi set after dark. Have you tried just putting a bit of electrical tape over the worst offenders? It’s not fancy, but it’s cheap and you can peel it off if you need to see what’s what. I keep wondering, do these companies think we want our homes to double as nightlights? Or is it just so we never forget they’re “working”? Sometimes I miss the days when the only thing that lit up at night was the VCR clock blinking 12:00...

I’ve definitely done the electrical tape trick—works in a pinch, but sometimes it leaves sticky gunk behind if you forget about it for months. Ever tried those little blackout sticker sheets? They’re cheap on Amazon and come in different sizes, so you can cover just the LED, not the whole panel. I do wonder if some of these lights are actually necessary for diagnostics or if they’re just there to remind us the device exists. It’s wild how every gadget now insists on announcing itself 24/7... makes me nostalgic for that old VCR too, even with the blinking.

I swear, those little LEDs are like the modern version of the “blinking 12:00” on every VCR in the ‘90s—except now they’re everywhere, and they never shut up. I’ve tried the blackout stickers, but half the time I end up misjudging the size and covering up something important, then I’m stuck peeling it off and making a mess. I get that some of these lights are supposed to be “helpful,” but honestly, does my router really need to flash like a rave every time it’s doing its job? If something’s actually wrong, I’d rather just get a notification on my phone than have to decode some cryptic blinking pattern at 2am.

It’s wild how we’re supposed to be making our homes “smarter,” but I feel like I’m spending more time managing all these glowing dots than actually enjoying any of the tech. Maybe I’m just old-school, but a little mystery—like not knowing if your toaster is plotting against you—wasn’t such a bad thing.

- Totally get the frustration with those LEDs.
- I’ve started using tiny bits of painter’s tape—easy to remove, doesn’t leave gunk, and you can layer it for brightness.
- Some devices let you dim or turn off lights in their settings, but it’s hit or miss.
- Honestly, I miss when “off” meant dark and quiet. Now my 1920s house glows like a spaceship at night... kind of ruins the old charm.
- Anyone else just unplug stuff when they’re tired of the blinking? Sometimes low-tech is the way to go.
