Now my 1920s house glows like a spaceship at night... kind of ruins the old charm.

Totally hear you on that—there’s something weirdly jarring about all those little lights in an old place. I get wanting tech, but it’s wild how “progress” sometimes means more clutter and less peace. I’ve started questioning if every gadget really needs to be “smart.” Sometimes, the best upgrade is just keeping things simple and energy-efficient. Unplugging stuff isn’t just low-tech, it’s honestly better for your electric bill and the planet too.

Yeah, I get that vibe—my old bungalow’s starting to look like the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon after dark. Ever try finding the one smart plug that’s glowing brighter than your porch light? Drives me nuts. I mean, do we really need our toasters to connect to WiFi? Sometimes I just want a lamp that turns off when I flip the switch, not after a firmware update. Hang in there—old houses have survived a lot worse than a few blinking LEDs.

Honestly, I hear this a lot lately. There’s something to be said for a plain old toggle switch—at least you know what it’s doing. I’ve had clients ask me to “de-smart” rooms because the tech just gets overwhelming or buggy. Doesn’t mean you’re behind the times, just that sometimes simple is better. Old houses have solid bones, and they don’t need WiFi to stand another hundred years.

I get where you’re coming from. I once flipped a 1920s bungalow and the new owners wanted all the smart stuff ripped out—just wanted regular switches and thermostats. Sometimes, less really is more, especially when you just want things to work every time.

That’s actually pretty fascinating. I’ve noticed a lot of folks are starting to feel overwhelmed by all the tech in their homes. There’s something comforting about a good old-fashioned light switch—you know exactly what it’ll do, every time. I do wonder, though, if there’s a middle ground? Like, maybe just a smart thermostat for energy savings, but keep the rest simple. Sometimes I feel like my house is judging me when I forget a command...
