"do I really need my fridge to text me?"
Haha, exactly my thoughts. When I first started looking into smart home stuff, I was tempted by all those flashy features too. But honestly, after crunching the numbers and thinking about actual daily use, most of it just didn't add up for me. Now I've settled on a few practical things—like smart thermostats and lights—that genuinely save money and hassle. Sometimes simpler really is smarter...and cheaper.
Haha, I feel you on the fridge texting thing...seems a bit much. I've got an older historic home, so my "smart" upgrades have been pretty selective:
- Smart thermostat: lifesaver for heating bills (old houses love to leak heat).
- Smart plugs: handy for lamps and holiday lights—beats crawling behind furniture.
- Doorbell cam: mostly to see if it's UPS or just the neighbor's cat again.
Other than that, I kinda prefer keeping things simple. Less troubleshooting, more charm...plus, fewer devices plotting against me when the robot uprising happens.
I'm with you on the selective upgrades—too much smart tech can feel overwhelming. But honestly, I've found smart lighting surprisingly useful even though I was skeptical at first. Being able to dim or adjust colors from the couch is kinda nice, especially for movie nights. Still, I draw the line at kitchen appliances sending notifications...I don't need my toaster judging my bread choices or anything.
Haha, totally get you on the toaster thing—I already feel judged enough by my fitness tracker. But speaking of smart lights, did you go full color-changing mode, or stick to warmer whites? I'm debating if rainbow vibes are worth it or just gimmicky...

I thought the same at first, but honestly, having color-changing lights is pretty nice for movie nights or chill evenings. Mostly stick to warm whites, but the occasional splash of color feels surprisingly cozy...worth a try imo.
