Totally agree on the thermostat thing—my experience was similar. A few thoughts from my own smart-home adventures:

- Wireless setup was mostly painless here too, even with older construction (early 70s). Mesh networks seem to handle quirky layouts pretty well, but placement matters more than you'd think. I had to shuffle the main router around a couple times before coverage felt solid everywhere.

- Thermostats... yeah, "universal" is definitely overstating it. My HVAC system isn't even that old, but the wiring diagrams were borderline useless. Ended up spending hours online trying to decode wire colors and terminal labels. Finally got it working, but I'm still not convinced it's optimized for efficiency.

- One thing nobody warned me about: smart lighting. Thought it'd be a breeze—just screw in bulbs and pair them, right? Nope. Turns out some fixtures don't play nice with certain bulbs (especially dimmers), and I had to swap out switches in two rooms. Also, the apps can get annoyingly complicated if you mix brands.

- On the plus side, smart plugs have been surprisingly hassle-free. They're cheap, easy to set up, and great for energy monitoring. I've actually caught a couple appliances sucking way more power than expected and swapped them out for more efficient models.

Overall, it's funny how the simplest-sounding upgrades can turn into weekend-long projects, while the stuff you brace yourself for ends up being plug-and-play. Guess that's just part of the DIY smart-home journey...

- Totally feel you on the lighting struggles. I thought smart bulbs would be easy too, but my older fixtures hated them. Ended up swapping out a couple switches and even had to return bulbs twice because of flickering issues.

- Curious about your smart plug experience though...did you find any specific brand that worked better for energy monitoring? Thinking of trying some myself but don't wanna end up with yet another app cluttering my phone.

Totally relate to your lighting saga—been there, done that, flickering bulbs and all. For smart plugs, I've had pretty solid luck with Kasa plugs. They integrate nicely with Alexa and Google Home, and their energy monitoring is straightforward without needing yet another app cluttering things up. Had a few hiccups at first pairing them, but once set up they've been rock solid. Hang in there...the smart home learning curve smooths out eventually.

Yeah, same here with the Kasa plugs. Setup was mostly smooth, but I did run into one stubborn plug that refused to pair until I reset it like three times...typical smart home drama. Energy monitoring's been pretty accurate though, helped me pinpoint a fridge that was guzzling electricity. Curious if anyone's tried other brands like Eve or Wemo—are they worth the extra bucks for energy tracking?

Funny you mention the fridge thing—I had a similar experience. A couple years back, I noticed my electric bill creeping up month after month, and I couldn't figure out why. Thought maybe it was just the kids leaving lights on or something. Eventually, I got a few of those Kasa plugs with energy monitoring, and sure enough, the old garage freezer was the culprit. Thing was ancient, probably older than me, and it was pulling way more juice than it was worth. Swapped it out for a newer, energy-efficient model, and the savings were noticeable almost immediately.

As for other brands, I've tried Wemo plugs before, and honestly, they're decent but not necessarily better enough to justify the extra cost. Setup was about the same—mostly smooth with the occasional stubborn device—but I didn't find their energy tracking significantly more accurate or detailed than Kasa's. Maybe slightly prettier graphs in the app, but that's about it. Haven't personally tried Eve yet, though I've heard good things from friends who are deep into the Apple ecosystem. Apparently, Eve integrates really smoothly with HomeKit, so if you're already invested there, it might be worth checking out.

One thing I've learned over the years is that smart home tech is rarely perfect out of the box. There's always some little quirk or hiccup, especially when you're mixing brands and ecosystems. But once you get past the initial setup headaches, it's usually pretty reliable. And honestly, the convenience and savings have made it worth the occasional frustration for me. Just don't get me started on firmware updates... seems like every time I open the app, there's another one waiting.
