Supposedly they combine the best of both worlds, but I haven’t tested them on a busy floor yet. Wondering if they’re actually more durable or just marketing hype...

I’ve wondered the same thing about hardwax oils. The claims sound promising, but I’m skeptical until I see how they handle real foot traffic—especially in entryways or kitchens. Has anyone noticed if they darken the wood over time, or do they stay pretty true to the original tone? That’s been my main hesitation with switching from traditional oil.

I’m right there with you—hardwax oils sound great on paper, but I’m not convinced they’re a miracle solution. I’ve read mixed things about color changes. Some folks say the wood stays pretty close to its natural look, but others mention a slight ambering over time, especially in spots that get a lot of sun or water. For me, the cost is another factor... if it’s not noticeably better than traditional oil, I’m not sure it’s worth the extra money.

I hear you on the cost—hardwax oil isn’t cheap, and I’m not totally sold on the “natural look” claims either. I’ve noticed in my own place that spots near windows tend to yellow a bit over time. Traditional oil’s a hassle to reapply, but at least you know what you’re getting. For me, unless you’re after a specific matte finish, the price jump just doesn’t add up.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve had clients swear by hardwax oil for that “bare wood” vibe, but honestly, it’s not always as low-maintenance as folks hope. I’ve seen the same yellowing near windows—sunlight just loves to mess with finishes. Traditional oil is a pain to reapply, sure, but at least you can patch up trouble spots without redoing the whole floor. Unless someone’s dead set on that ultra-matte look, I usually steer them toward what’s tried and true... and easier on the wallet.

I totally hear you on the yellowing. We went with a “bare wood” look in our living room, and it looked awesome at first, but the spots by the sliding door went kinda golden after a summer. Not terrible, but not what I expected. I do like that with oil, you can just touch up a patch. Wax always felt like more work for me, honestly. Maybe I’m just lazy, but I’d rather not redo the whole thing every time the dog skids across it.
