Wax is my go-to too, especially in rentals. Tenants and their “creative” furniture rearranging skills are no match for oil—one scratch and it’s like a crime scene. Wax is way more forgiving, and I can fix it up between tenants without losing my mind... or my deposit.

Couldn’t agree more—wax is a lifesaver, especially in older homes where the floors have seen decades of “creative” living. I’ve tried oil a few times, but one deep gouge and it’s like the Grand Canyon. Wax just blends in, and you can patch up spots without redoing the whole thing. Plus, there’s something about that soft sheen that feels right in a historic place. You’re definitely not alone in this… wax all the way for sanity’s sake.

I get the appeal of wax, especially for spot fixes and that mellow look. But I’ve always wondered about the long-term buildup—ever run into issues with layers getting cloudy or sticky over time? I’ve seen some floors where old wax just attracts grime like a magnet. Curious if there’s a trick to keeping it clean without stripping everything off.

I’ve definitely had a few “what is that gunk?” moments with waxed floors. One time, I bought this old house and the living room floor was like a time capsule from the 70s—layers of wax just sitting there, dull and sticky. Every time I tried to buff out a spot, it just smeared around. Turns out, if you don’t keep up with regular cleaning (and use the right products), wax can get gross pretty fast.

That said, I’ve also seen wax look amazing when it’s done right. My trick now is to go super light on re-applications—like, once a year max—and always use a barely-damp mop in between. And yeah, sometimes you do have to bite the bullet and strip it back if it gets too far gone. Honestly, oil finishes are lower maintenance in the long run, but wax has that old-school vibe that’s hard to beat... until it turns into a grime magnet.

- Totally get what you mean about wax turning into a sticky mess if it’s not kept up.
- I’ve stripped floors before and it’s a pain, but honestly, sometimes there’s just no shortcut.
- Agree on the “old-school vibe” though—waxed floors have a certain look that oil just can’t copy.
- I do think oil finishes are easier for most folks, especially if you’ve got pets or kids running around.
- Your once-a-year approach sounds smart. I tried to re-wax more often and just ended up with buildup.
- At the end of the day, both have their headaches... but when wax is good, it’s really good.
