Wax looks amazing in photos, but real life is messier.

That’s the thing, right? I tried wax on a small section once because I loved the look, but it was a magnet for every little mark. Maybe it’s just me, but I found myself obsessing over every scratch. With oil, I can just rub in a bit more and call it a day. Not perfect, but way less stress. Maybe wax is better if you don’t have kids or pets constantly testing the limits...

I totally get where you’re coming from. Wax does have that gorgeous, velvety look, but it’s definitely high-maintenance. I tried it on a coffee table once—looked stunning for about a week, then every fingerprint and water ring drove me nuts. Oil finishes aren’t as dramatic, but they’re way more forgiving. If you’ve got a busy household, oil just makes life easier. Sometimes practicality wins over aesthetics...

Totally agree about the maintenance side of wax—it’s gorgeous, but I just can’t keep up with it. I tried doing a DIY wax finish on my dining chairs and honestly, between the kids and the dog, it was a losing battle. Oil finishes might not have that same “wow” factor, but they’re way less stressful to touch up. Has anyone found a budget-friendly oil that still brings out the wood grain? I’m always torn between saving money and getting something that actually lasts...

I’m right there with you—wax looks amazing for about five minutes in my house, then it’s just fingerprints and smudges. Honestly, I switched to Danish oil on our kitchen table and it’s been a game changer. It’s not super pricey (I grabbed Watco when it was on sale) and it really does make the grain pop. Plus, touch-ups are no big deal… I just wipe a bit on every few months and call it good. Not as glossy as wax, but way less hassle, especially with pets and kids running around.

I hear you on the fingerprints—wax just never holds up in high-traffic spaces, especially with kids around. With Danish oil, have you noticed any issues with water rings or staining over time? I’ve had a few clients mention that, especially if someone forgets a wet glass. Curious if you’ve run into that or if it’s just been smooth sailing. Sometimes I wonder if there’s a happy medium between ease of upkeep and real protection...
