Yeah, I totally get the appeal of that “lived-in” patina too. Honestly, I’ve tried both and always end up back with oil for the easy touch-ups. Wax just felt like a losing battle with pets and kids running around. The color shift with oil can be a bummer if you want that fresh look, but I kinda like how it settles in over time. Guess it really depends on what vibe you’re after.

Had a similar experience when I refinished my old oak floors. Tried wax first because I liked the idea of something more “natural,” but with two dogs and a kid, it just didn’t hold up. Every scuff showed, and I was constantly buffing out spots. Switched to oil and yeah, the color deepened more than I expected, but honestly, it hides the mess better and touch-ups are way less hassle. The patina’s grown on me—feels like the floor’s got some history now.

I get the appeal of wax—there’s something classic about it, and I love the look right after you finish buffing. But with pets, it just doesn’t hold up long-term. I went with a hardwax oil blend last time, and while it darkened the wood more than I planned, it’s way less stressful to maintain. The floor looks “lived in” now, which honestly feels right for a busy house. Wax is nice in theory, but oil’s just more forgiving in real life.

That makes a lot of sense, especially with pets running around. I’ve been researching finishes for our place and keep coming back to the same conclusion—wax looks amazing at first, but the upkeep seems relentless. The “lived in” look you mentioned actually sounds appealing to me, too. Sometimes practicality just wins out over aesthetics, and it’s reassuring to hear that hardwax oil holds up better day-to-day. Maybe the slight darkening is a fair trade-off for less stress?

Honestly, I was in the same boat a year ago—totally drawn to that buttery, hand-rubbed wax look. But with a 70lb dog and two kids, I had to face reality. Wax just didn’t stand a chance. It looked gorgeous for about a week, then it was all scuffs and water spots. The maintenance was never-ending, and I got tired of buffing out every little mark.

Hardwax oil was a game changer for us. Yeah, it does darken the wood a bit, but I actually like the richer tone. It feels more forgiving, too—scratches blend in instead of standing out like neon signs. And if something really bad happens, spot repairs are way easier than with wax. I get wanting that pristine look, but honestly, the “lived in” vibe has grown on me. Our floors still look great, just less precious... which is a relief with pets zooming around. For me, less stress totally outweighs the tiny compromise in color.
