Regretting my fridge placement—anyone else have workflow issues?

Man, fridge placement can really make or break a kitchen. I’ve run into that cabinet-blocking issue in a couple of rentals I own, and honestly, the reversible doors help sometimes—but not always. If the wall’s too close, even flipping the door doesn’t give you much more room to swing it open. Sometimes you just end up swapping which cabinet you can’t get into.

Those slide-out pantry racks are hit or miss. I put one in a tight galley kitchen thinking it’d be a game changer, but it turned into a catch-all for random stuff and was kind of a pain to keep organized. On the other hand, in another place with barely any storage, it actually made a difference—just depends how disciplined you are about not letting it turn into a junk drawer on wheels.

If you’re stuck with the layout, sometimes it’s about picking your battles. I’ve seen people just take the door off the problem cabinet and use baskets instead... not pretty, but it works in a pinch.

I actually tried the basket trick once, but it drove me nuts after a while—stuff just looked messy all the time. In my old house (think 1920s kitchen, barely any built-ins), I ended up hanging a curtain over the open cabinet instead. Not everyone’s style, but it kept things easy to grab and hid the clutter. Sometimes a little fabric goes a long way if you can’t move the fridge or rip out cabinets.

Funny, I tried the curtain thing and it just wasn’t for me—kept getting caught on stuff, and my cat thought it was a toy. Ended up putting some shallow shelves in that awkward space instead. Not perfect, but at least I can see everything now. Sometimes those “quick fixes” just turn into new headaches, huh?

- Been there with the curtain—my dog thought it was a secret passage and kept charging through.
- Shallow shelves are underrated, honestly. At least you don’t have to wrestle with fabric every time you want a snack.
- Workflow-wise, I swear fridge placement is like Tetris for adults. If it’s not blocking the pantry, it’s in the way of the trash can.
- Quick fixes always seem to multiply my problems... but hey, at least we’re getting creative with awkward spaces, right?
- If you ever want to try something different, I’ve seen people use baskets on those shelves for a more “contained chaos” vibe. Not perfect, but less likely to become a cat playground.

Fridge placement is one of those things that seems so straightforward until you actually have to live with it. I moved mine last year thinking I was optimizing the whole kitchen “flow,” but somehow ended up making my morning routine a full obstacle course. There’s this sweet spot between the pantry and the trash can, but if you get it wrong by even a few inches, suddenly you’re doing this weird sideways shuffle every time you need milk.

I totally get what you mean about quick fixes multiplying problems. I tried to solve my own “fridge in the way” issue by putting a rolling cart next to it for extra storage—ended up just blocking myself in more often than not. It’s like, every solution spawns two new quirks. But I guess that’s half the fun? Or at least, that’s what I tell myself when I’m crawling under a shelf to retrieve rogue Tupperware.

“Shallow shelves are underrated, honestly. At least you don’t have to wrestle with fabric every time you want a snack.”

Couldn’t agree more about shallow shelves. Deep ones just become black holes for expired snacks and mystery jars. I did the basket thing too—helps a bit, but my cat still thinks it’s her personal jungle gym. Maybe that’s just inevitable.

If it helps, I’ve found that sometimes just living with the awkwardness for a while makes it easier to see what really needs changing. I spent months annoyed at my fridge before realizing the real issue was actually the trash can placement (go figure). Moving that gave me way more room to maneuver.

Anyway, you’re definitely not alone in the kitchen Tetris struggle. At least we’re all getting pretty creative with these weird layouts... and maybe learning some new dance moves dodging pets and appliances along the way.
