Regretting my fridge placement - anyone else have workflow issues?
Kind of feels like no matter what, there’s always some little tradeoff you don’t see coming until you live with it for a bit. Guess that’s just how kitchen renos go...
Man, you nailed it with that. I’ve done a few kitchen overhauls and every single time, there’s some “gotcha” moment you just can’t plan for. Last time, I thought I was being smart by putting the microwave right above the stove - looked great on paper, but then I realized I couldn’t fit a big pot on the back burner without bumping my head every time. Live and learn, right?
The fridge by the entrance thing is classic. Super handy for groceries, but yeah, turns into a bottleneck when you’ve got more than one person in there. I’ve seen folks try to fix it with those little “fridge zones” or even putting the fridge in a pantry area, but then you’re running laps for milk. There’s just no perfect setup.
Honestly, I think kitchens are like Tetris - no matter how you arrange the pieces, there’s always that one block that messes up your flow.
Honestly, I get where you’re coming from, but I think there are ways to sidestep some of those classic workflow headaches if you really dig into the planning phase. The “fridge by the entrance” thing gets a bad rap, but I’ve found it can work well if you tweak the layout around it. For example, leaving a bit more clearance space or shifting the pantry closer to the fridge can help keep things moving when there’s more than one person in the kitchen.
Microwave over the stove - yeah, that’s a tough one. I’ve seen that trip up a lot of folks, especially if you’re tall or use big cookware. Personally, I try to keep microwaves at counter height now, maybe tucked into an island or a lower cabinet. It frees up headspace and keeps the cooktop area clear.
No setup is perfect, sure, but I think with enough attention to flow and spacing, you can minimize those “Tetris block” moments. Sometimes it just means breaking away from what looks good on paper and focusing on how you actually move around when you cook.
I get what you’re saying about tweaking the layout, but honestly, I’ve seen the “fridge by the entrance” thing backfire more often than not. Even with extra clearance, it tends to become a bottleneck, especially if you’ve got kids or guests grabbing drinks while someone’s cooking. In my experience, nothing beats having the fridge a little deeper into the kitchen triangle - just makes for smoother traffic flow. As for microwaves, totally agree on ditching the over-the-range setup. It’s just awkward, and nobody wants to dodge hot steam or reach over a boiling pot.

This is exactly what’s happening at my place - my fridge is basically a snack magnet for my kids and their friends. I swear, it’s like rush hour in there every time I’m trying to chop onions. Did anyone else underestimate how much “fridge traffic” would mess with their sanity? Also, who decided microwaves above the stove were a good idea? My arms are not that long...

Totally get this. I thought I’d planned my kitchen layout well, but the fridge is always the main hangout spot. It’s wild how much traffic jams up right when you’re in the middle of cooking. And yeah, those over-the-stove microwaves? Whoever designed that must have been seven feet tall... I’ve nearly dropped hot soup more than once.
