Regretting my fridge placement - anyone else have workflow issues?
Funny you mention the sideways shuffle - I’ve seen folks practically doing yoga just to open their freezer. Rearranging can help, but sometimes it’s about working with what you’ve got. Have you tried mapping out your kitchen “work triangle”? Sometimes just shifting a trash bin or adding a rolling cart changes the whole flow. Curious - what’s around your fridge right now? Any cabinets or obstacles making things trickier than they should be?

Right now, there’s a tall pantry cabinet to the left of my fridge and honestly, it’s more of a pain than I expected. The doors bump into each other if I’m not careful, and it’s just awkward when I’m unloading groceries. Have you thought about swapping out any nearby cabinets for open shelving? Sometimes just removing a door or two can make a surprising difference. Also, if you’ve got the space, I’ve seen folks use a slim pull-out rack for snacks or spices right next to the fridge - makes use of those weird gaps and keeps things accessible. Ever tried something like that?
Honestly, those pantry cabinets right next to the fridge are sneaky troublemakers. I tried open shelving for a while, but then I realized I’m not tidy enough for it - looked like a grocery store exploded on my wall. The pull-out rack is a cool idea though. Haven’t tried one myself, but I’ve seen them in action at a friend’s place and it actually made that awkward gap useful. Still, kind of wish I’d just left more breathing room on both sides... hindsight’s 20/20, right?
That awkward gap next to the fridge is always tricky. I’ve seen people try to maximize it with those pull-out racks, and they do seem handy for spices or smaller items - definitely better than letting it become a dead zone. But I get what you mean about wishing for more space on either side. Sometimes, in the quest for storage, we end up making the kitchen feel cramped or less functional. I’ve found that leaving a bit of “breathing room” around big appliances actually helps airflow and energy efficiency too, which is easy to overlook when planning. Funny how those little decisions end up mattering way more than you’d think...

That’s a good point about airflow - seen a few kitchens where folks packed things in so tight the fridge was basically gasping for air. I get the urge to use every inch, but sometimes those pull-out racks just end up as clutter collectors. Personally, I’d rather have a little wasted space than a fridge that runs hot or doors that bang into cabinets. Funny how a couple inches here or there can make or break the whole kitchen vibe...
