Regretting my fridge placement - anyone else have workflow issues?
- Totally get where you’re coming from - sometimes it feels like we’re just playing “musical chairs” with the clutter.
- I’ve actually moved my slow cooker and bread maker to a basement shelf. It freed up counter space, but yeah, sometimes I forget they exist now.
- For me, it’s about balance. If you use something once a month, out of sight works. But if you’re hauling stuff back and forth every week, it gets old fast.
- Don’t be too hard on yourself. Most kitchens weren’t designed for real life anyway... we’re all just making it work.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Most kitchens weren’t designed for real life anyway... we’re all just making it work.
Ain’t that the truth. Whoever designed my kitchen must’ve thought I was running a food museum, not actually cooking three meals a day. My fridge is wedged in a corner so tight, opening the door feels like solving a Rubik’s Cube - gotta angle my body just right or risk bruised shins and a flying yogurt.
I totally get the “musical chairs” vibe with appliances, too. I tried the whole “out of sight, out of mind” thing with my air fryer. Now it’s basically in witness protection down in the laundry room. Every time I want fries, it’s like embarking on an expedition.
But back to fridge placement - honestly, if you’re constantly zig-zagging across the kitchen just to grab milk or veggies, it’s not you, it’s the layout. Kitchens should come with a warning: “Objects may be further than they appear.” The so-called “kitchen triangle” is great in theory, but in reality? Sometimes it feels more like a kitchen obstacle course.
If moving the fridge isn’t an option (which, let’s be real, is most of us), I’ve found that organizing what goes where inside helps a bit. Like, keep your most-used stuff at arm’s reach and banish the random condiments to the back. And if you’re always bumping into someone else trying to get to the fridge while you’re cooking - welcome to my world. At this point, I’m considering traffic cones and a whistle.
Anyway, don’t sweat it too much. Most of us are just improvising with what we’ve got. If nothing else, at least we’re getting our steps in... even if it’s just from fridge to counter and back again.
You’re definitely not alone - awkward fridge placement is one of the most common complaints I hear. It’s wild how many kitchens just don’t account for real movement or multiple people. Honestly, sometimes even a small tweak like swapping which way the door swings can help a bit, but I get that’s not always possible. At least you’ve got a sense of humor about it... that’s half the battle.
Honestly, I hear folks talk about switching the swing on the fridge door all the time, but in my experience, that only solves part of the problem - if it solves anything. Sometimes the real issue is that the fridge just isn’t in the right spot to begin with, and flipping the door doesn’t fix how you have to step around someone at the sink or dodge cabinet doors. Ever notice how some kitchens put the fridge right next to a wall or a corner, so you can’t even open the door all the way? Drives me nuts.
I’m curious - have you actually looked at whether there’s any way to shift other things around instead of just focusing on the fridge? Like, sometimes moving a pantry or even a trash can frees up a surprising amount of space. I once helped a neighbor who was convinced their fridge was the problem, but it turned out the breakfast bar was bottlenecking everything. We hacked off a foot from that bar and suddenly you could actually get to the fridge without playing bumper cars.
What about overhead cabinets? Sometimes those get in the way more than people realize, especially if they’re right above the fridge and you’re always bonking your head or can’t reach stuff. I know not everyone’s up for demo work, but even taking off a cabinet door or two can make things feel less cramped.
I get that not everyone wants to start tearing their kitchen apart, but sometimes it’s worth thinking bigger than just the fridge door. Even swapping out a bulky handle for a recessed one can make a difference if you’re really tight on clearance. Just my two cents - sometimes those “little tweaks” folks suggest aren’t enough if the basic layout is fighting you at every turn.

Oh man, preach. I moved into my first place and thought, “How bad could it be?” Turns out, trying to wedge myself between the fridge and the oven like a Tetris piece every morning is not my idea of fun. I tried swapping which way the door swings and... yeah, still had to do the awkward sidestep dance.
Ended up sliding my trash can into the pantry (which felt weird at first but actually worked), and suddenly there was space for two humans in the kitchen at once. Who knew? If you ever want a laugh, try removing just one cabinet door above your fridge - mine’s still sitting in my garage because I’m not sure if I’m committed or just lazy.
