If my reno budget magically doubled, I’d probably go a little wild with the “wow” stuff, even knowing it’s not always practical. I mean, I put in a built-in espresso machine once because I thought it’d make me look like I had my life together. Turns out, I still just microwaved my coffee half the time. But here’s the thing—sometimes those flashy features do get noticed, just not by everyone. My sister-in-law still talks about the pot filler in her kitchen like it’s the eighth wonder of the world, and she actually uses it. Meanwhile, my neighbor’s soft-close drawers are constantly jammed with takeout menus.

I guess it depends on who’s using the kitchen. If you’re flipping, yeah, stick to the crowd-pleasers. But if you’re staying put and you know you’ll use that wine fridge for your “juice” collection (no judgment), why not? Sometimes it’s fun to splurge on something just because it makes you smile when you walk in.

That’s so real. I’ve seen folks go all-in on gadgets and then end up using the same old mug and kettle. But hey, if it makes you happy, that’s what counts. I always tell people—if you’re gonna splurge, pick the thing you’ll actually use (or at least smile at). Pot fillers are one of those things people either love or totally ignore... but when someone’s into it, they’re INTO it.

If my budget doubled, I’d probably pause and make a list of what I actually use every day. No sense in adding a fancy gadget just because it looks cool. I’d focus on storage upgrades—drawers that actually close right, better lighting, maybe splurge on countertops I’ll appreciate long-term. Funny how the “boring” upgrades end up being the ones you notice most.

I totally get what you mean about the “boring” upgrades making the biggest difference. When I redid my kitchen, I skipped the flashy stuff and focused on things like low-VOC cabinets and energy-efficient lighting. It’s wild how much better the space feels just from those changes. If your budget doubled, would you consider eco-friendly materials or appliances? Sometimes they cost a bit more upfront, but I’ve found they pay off in comfort and lower bills over time.

You nailed it—those “boring” upgrades are the real MVPs. I’ve flipped a few places and honestly, the fancy backsplash or trendy hardware never made as much difference as better lighting or solid, non-toxic materials. If my budget doubled, I’d 100% lean into eco-friendly stuff too. The upfront cost can sting a bit, but the payoff in comfort (and lower energy bills) is huge. Plus, buyers are starting to care about that more these days. Sometimes I wish I’d skipped a couple of “wow” features for even more practical upgrades... live and learn, right?
