If my reno budget doubled overnight, I'd skip the plywood and go straight for solid hardwood or at least high-quality engineered stuff—less bowing, way sturdier. And yeah, studs every time. Drywall anchors are just asking for trouble with anything heavy. Learned that lesson with a spice rack, not even cans. If you’ve got extra cash, invest in good hardware and maybe some custom work. Makes a huge difference long-term.

I hear you on the drywall anchors—my “floating” shelf is now a “leaning” shelf after one too many jars of peanut butter. But honestly, if my budget doubled, I’d probably still be hunting for deals. I just can’t bring myself to pay full price for anything unless it’s appliances or maybe a killer faucet. Anyone else feel like hardware prices are secretly made up? Custom work sounds dreamy, but I’d probably just end up with fancier IKEA hacks...

Totally. Drawer pulls costing more than a whole cabinet sometimes—makes zero sense to me. If my budget doubled, I’d probably still be patching holes from failed anchor attempts and figuring out how to make IKEA look custom with paint and patience. Ever tried those toggle bolts for shelves? They’ve saved me from more than one “leaning” disaster.

If I had double the budget, I'd probably still be hunting for deals on hardware. It's wild how a single brass knob can cost more than a used chair. I totally get the IKEA hacks—half my kitchen is a patchwork of thrifted finds and paint touch-ups. Toggle bolts are a lifesaver, though. Had a shelf full of vintage Pyrex try to make a run for it once... those bolts held on for dear life. Sometimes I wonder if the price tags are just there to mess with us.

If my kitchen reno budget magically doubled, I’d probably still be scouring Craigslist and the ReStore for deals, just like you. There’s something about finding a $3 drawer pull that feels way more satisfying than dropping $30 on a new one. But I might actually splurge on something eco-friendly, like recycled glass countertops or an induction cooktop—stuff that’s usually out of reach.

Funny you mention toggle bolts—those things are underrated. I once tried to hang a pot rack in plaster and learned the hard way that not all anchors are created equal... ended up with a pile of pans on the floor at 2am. Lesson learned.

Curious—if you could spend extra on one “green” upgrade, would you go for appliances, insulation, or maybe something like reclaimed wood cabinets? Sometimes the sustainable options seem even pricier than the fancy hardware.
