How much scope belongs in a recessed LED quote?
Discussion options
A low quote for LED retrofit trims can look appealing, but it only answers the question if the existing recessed housings are in suitable condition and compatible with the proposed trims.
When comparing quotes, would you ask for the electrician to inspect the housings and wiring first, then price the trim retrofit separately from replacing the housings and fixtures? I’d also want to know whether each price includes checking dimmer compatibility and disposing of the old parts. What details would help show that the cheaper scope is appropriate, rather than just leaving an unknown condition out of the estimate?

The hidden-condition piece is the fallback price. I’d ask for the quote to show how many housings pass inspection and what it would cost, or what allowance applies, for each one that doesn’t. That makes the retrofit price easier to compare without leaving the replacement exposure open-ended.
