One caveat before anyone swaps in smart switches: check the switch box for a neutral wire first. A lot of older homes—especially prewar ones—only have line and load at the box, so a standard smart switch may not work properly or may be unsafe to install without rewiring.
A practical sequence is:
1. Turn off the breaker and verify the circuit is dead.
2. Check whether a neutral bundle is present in the back of the box; don’t assume the white wire is neutral, since older wiring can use it differently.
3. If there’s no neutral, choose a model specifically rated for no-neutral installations, following its minimum-load requirements.
4. If the wiring is knob-and-tube, aluminum, badly deteriorated, or confusing, have an electrician inspect it before proceeding.
The no-neutral options have improved, but compatibility can still depend on the lamp load and whether a bypass component is required. The switch-box check is easy to overlook and can save a lot of flickering and troubleshooting later.
