"at certain times of day it turned my living room into a blinding spotlight zone..."

Had a similar experience myself—thought sheer curtains would diffuse the sunlight nicely, but ended up with weird glare patterns all over the walls. Curious if anyone's tried frosted window films instead...might be a subtler solution.

I've actually used frosted films in my old Victorian place—worked surprisingly well. The sunlight softened nicely, and no weird glare patterns either. Only thing was, it dulled the view a bit more than I expected...felt like I was living in a gentle fog some days. Wonder if there's a middle-ground solution out there, something between sheer curtains and full-on frosting?

You might want to look into semi-transparent window films—they're sometimes called "privacy films." They're less opaque than full frosting, offering a softer diffusion without completely blurring the view.

I had a similar issue in my home office and found this type of film struck a good balance between privacy and natural light.

Semi-transparent films are great, but a heads-up if you're budget-conscious like me:

- Check your local dollar store first—sometimes they have cheap rolls that do the trick.
- DIY hack: diluted glue and tissue paper (sounds sketchy, but trust me, it works).
- Bonus: peeling it off later is oddly satisfying...

Haha, I've actually seen this done before—it's surprisingly effective. Curious though, have you noticed any issues with moisture or humidity affecting the glue over time? I've had clients who've tried similar DIY methods, and sometimes humidity can cause peeling or bubbling after a while.

Another budget-friendly alternative I've recommended is frosted contact paper. It's usually pretty affordable online or at hardware stores, and it's easy to apply without worrying about glue consistency. Plus, it comes off cleanly if you decide to change things up later on.

Also wondering—has anyone experimented with layering different shades of semi-transparent films? I've found that combining warmer and cooler tones can subtly shift the mood of a room throughout the day... could be worth playing around with if you're into experimenting.
