That's exactly why I chickened out on reflective wallpaper, haha. My walls are definitely not smooth enough for that kind of scrutiny. Instead, I've found mirrors placed strategically can do wonders without highlighting every little flaw. I picked up a couple of large mirrors from thrift stores, painted the frames to match my decor, and hung them opposite windows. Instant brightness boost without the stress of perfect walls.

Also, sheer curtains have been a lifesaver for meβ€”cheap, easy to install, and they diffuse natural light beautifully. I think reflective surfaces can totally work, but maybe in smaller doses or areas you're confident about. Like you said, it's all trial and error...and sometimes a bit of luck.

Mirrors opposite windows definitely help bounce the light around nicely, but have you tried lighter paint colors or finishes with a subtle sheen? Matte paints can absorb a lot of natural light...maybe that's part of the issue you're running into.

Mirrors and lighter paints definitely help, but I'm not totally convinced matte paint is always the culprit. I recently painted my living room a matte off-white, and honestly, it feels brighter than when it was glossy beige. Maybe it's more about the shade itself rather than just the finish? Also, have you considered your furniture or flooring? Darker furniture or heavy rugs can soak up a surprising amount of natural light too...I learned that the hard way after buying a dark couch. Just something else to think about before repainting everything.

Totally agree about furniture being sneaky. I once swapped out my dark navy curtains for sheer white ones, and it was like someone finally turned the sun back on in there...who knew curtains could be such drama queens? Matte paint gets a bad rap sometimes.

Curtains really do have a flair for drama, don't they? I had a client once who was convinced her room needed a full remodelβ€”turns out, just swapping her heavy velvet drapes for something lighter did the trick. And you're right about matte paint; it can be surprisingly cozy and inviting when done right.
