Sneaky ways to brighten your space without flipping the switch
"I tried using a large mirror opposite the window in my last place, and yeah, it brightened things up nicely... until sunset hit and the glare was blinding."
Yeah, mirrors can be tricky like that. Honestly, I've found sheer curtains or semi-transparent blinds way more effective. They diffuse the sunlight nicely without killing the brightness completely. Plus, you don't have to rearrange your whole room just to dodge glare. Might be worth a shot if you're still struggling with reflections...
I tried sheer curtains once, but honestly they didn't do much for me. Ended up going with frosted window film instead - super easy to apply, no glare, and still lets in plenty of natural light. Might be worth considering if curtains aren't cutting it...
Frosted film is a solid choice - I used it in a client's kitchen once, and it worked wonders. Another trick I've found helpful is placing mirrors strategically opposite windows or bright areas. Had a small apartment project last year where we did this, and the difference was pretty surprising...felt like we doubled the natural light without adding any extra fixtures. Curtains can be hit or miss, honestly, especially if you're dealing with limited sunlight to begin with.
Mirrors opposite windows is such an underrated hack - I did something similar in my own place because my living room window is annoyingly tiny and north-facing. I actually thrifted this huge vintage mirror, propped it up on the wall across from the window, and honestly, it was like magic. The whole space felt instantly bigger and brighter, plus the reflection of greenery from outside gave my room this peaceful vibe I didn't expect.
But yeah, curtains...I get what you mean about them being hit or miss. I've found sheer white curtains can help diffuse the little sunlight you have without blocking it out completely. Darker, thicker fabrics always seem to suck the life out of my rooms. Has anyone tried reflective paint or lighter wall colors specifically to bounce more daylight around? I've been curious about how effective that really is.

I've actually used a soft eggshell white paint in my bedroom, and it genuinely made a noticeable difference. Curious though, has anyone experimented with glossy finishes - do they amplify the effect or just look weirdly shiny?
