I’ve used them in a couple rentals where I couldn’t do much else, and it made a huge difference. One thing I’d add—if you’re worried about fingerprints or smudges (especially if you’ve ...

I’ve definitely noticed the same thing with sheer curtains—makes a world of difference, especially in older homes with small windows. One trick I tried in my last place was using reclaimed wood for shelving right under the mirrors. Not only did it bounce light around, but it also gave me a spot for plants. Plants can actually help brighten a room too, in a weird way. They reflect a surprising amount of light off their leaves, especially if you go for glossy varieties. I’m not totally sold on putting mirrors higher up, though. Sometimes you lose that sense of depth if they’re too far above eye level... but I get wanting to keep those smudges away.

That’s a good point about plants—never really thought about the glossy leaves reflecting light, but now that you mention it, my pothos does seem to catch the sun and bounce it around a bit. I’m with you on the mirror placement, though. When they’re too high, it just feels off, like you’re looking at someone else’s space. I’ve had better luck keeping mirrors at eye level and just wiping them down every so often.

Curious if anyone’s tried swapping out dark rugs or furniture for lighter ones? I switched to a lighter jute rug last year and it made the whole room feel less gloomy, even on cloudy days. Wondering if that’s just me or if it’s a real thing...

Lighter rugs are magic, I swear. I swapped out my old charcoal one for a beige flatweave and suddenly my living room stopped looking like a vampire’s lair. It’s wild how much difference it makes—like the whole place just took a deep breath. I was skeptical at first because, you know, light colors + pets = disaster, but honestly, it’s been easier to keep clean than I expected.

I do think the lighter furniture trick works too, but sometimes it feels like you’re living in a rental with all those off-white IKEA pieces. I ended up mixing in a couple lighter throw blankets and pillow covers instead, and that seemed to help without making the room feel too sterile. Also, anyone else notice that even just moving stuff around every now and then makes things feel brighter? Or maybe that’s just me procrastinating on actual cleaning...

- Totally hear you on lighter rugs—makes such a difference, right?
- I get what you mean with the IKEA vibe. A little too “blank slate” if you go all in, but your throw blanket trick is spot on.
- Rearranging furniture might be my main cleaning strategy... it’s like a free mood boost, even if it’s just shuffling the same stuff around.
- For pets, I’ve found that natural fiber rugs (like jute or sisal) hide fur way better than expected. Also, they’re super eco-friendly, so double win.
- Honestly, sometimes just opening the curtains does more than any decor swap. But hey, whatever gets us to procrastinate actual cleaning, right?

Natural fiber rugs are a game changer, but I’ll admit, jute can be a little rough on bare feet if you’re not used to it. I’m with you on rearranging furniture—sometimes just swapping the couch and chair makes the whole room feel new. One thing I’ve started doing is leaning a big mirror opposite the window. It bounces so much light around, especially in my north-facing living room. Doesn’t cost much if you thrift it, either.
