try using multiple smaller DC fans spaced out, instead of one giant one. It spreads the airflow more evenly and you don’t get that tornado feeling right underneath.

I’ve tried both setups and honestly, I’m with you on the “tornado” effect from those monster fans. Had one in my old workshop—felt like I was in a wind tunnel every time it kicked on. Not exactly relaxing, unless you’re into that sort of thing.

The smaller DC fans are definitely a smarter move for open spaces, especially if you care about energy use. They’re way more efficient, and you can actually control the climate instead of just blasting air everywhere. Plus, if you’re into the eco side of things, DC motors use less power and last longer. Less landfill fodder down the road.

One thing I’ll say though—installing a bunch of smaller fans can be a pain if you’re dealing with old wiring or weird ceiling layouts. I had to run new lines in my place, which meant crawling around in the attic for hours. Not my favorite Saturday, but worth it once it was done.

Also, there’s something to be said for being able to tweak the speeds in different zones. My kitchen gets roasting when the oven’s on, but the living area stays pretty chill. Having separate controls is a game changer.

If anyone’s thinking about going this route, just double-check your circuit loads before adding a bunch of fans. Learned that one the hard way—tripped a breaker during a dinner party and had to eat by candlelight. Not as romantic as it sounds when you’re sweating over lasagna.

Anyway, big fan (pun intended) of the multiple small fan approach. The air feels way more natural and you don’t get that “hair blowing back” look every time you walk under one.

I totally get the pain of crawling around in the attic—been there, done that, and got the itchy arms to prove it. I’m still debating if it’s worth the hassle to swap out my old ceiling fan setup for a bunch of smaller DC ones. The energy savings sound great, but I keep wondering if I’ll actually notice a difference on my bill, or if it’s just one of those “feels good” upgrades.

That part really caught my eye. My kitchen basically turns into a sauna every time I try to cook anything more complicated than toast, while the living room stays like an icebox. Being able to just crank up the fan over the stove area would be awesome. But then again, wiring in separate controls sounds like a project that could spiral (and probably cost more than I want to spend).

Also, minor gripe—I’ve noticed some of those smaller fans can get noisy, especially the cheaper ones. Anyone else run into that? Or maybe I just got unlucky with my bargain bin specials...

100% agree—targeted airflow is a game changer, especially in open layouts.
- Wiring for separate controls can get messy fast. I tried it in my last place and ended up calling an electrician halfway through. Not cheap.
- Cheap fans = noisy fans, in my experience. The bargain ones in my garage buzz like crazy. Spending a bit more upfront usually means quieter motors and better balance.
- If you’re handy, smart switches or remotes can help avoid extra wiring. Not perfect, but less hassle than tearing into walls.

I get what you mean about wiring getting out of hand. I thought I’d be clever and run new lines myself, but tracing old wires in plaster walls was a nightmare. Ended up using a smart remote setup instead. Not flawless, but way less dust and drama. And yeah, cheap fans are just not worth it... learned that lesson after one started rattling at 2am.

Man, I hear you on the plaster walls. Every time someone says “it’ll just be a quick wire run,” I get flashbacks to chasing ancient knob-and-tube through crumbly horsehair plaster. Sometimes it’s just not worth the mess or the patchwork after. Those smart remotes are a lifesaver for retrofits—maybe not perfect, but they save a ton of headaches.

And yeah, cheap fans are a gamble. I’ve had clients try to save a few bucks and then call me back when their “bargain” fan starts making weird noises or wobbling like crazy. If you’re putting in the effort to get airflow right, it’s worth investing in something solid. DC motors are so much quieter and more efficient too.

One trick I’ve used in big open spaces is to angle fans slightly instead of pointing them straight down—helps move air across the room instead of just blasting one spot. Makes a surprising difference, especially if you’ve got high ceilings or an open floor plan.
