I get the appeal of open concept, but honestly, I think people underestimate how much noise and clutter can get on your nerves. Tried sliding doors once—looked cool, but didn’t block sound as much as I hoped. Partial glass walls are better for light, not privacy. Sometimes a good old-fashioned wall just works.

Couldn’t agree more. We tried the open concept thing when we renovated, thinking it’d make the house feel bigger. Turns out, it just made it easier for my kids’ toys and noise to travel everywhere. I get wanting more light, but honestly, drywall is cheaper than fancy glass or sliding doors—and you don’t have to worry about fingerprints. Sometimes “boring” is just practical, especially when you’re on a budget.
I get where you’re coming from—open concept can be a pain with kids, no doubt. But I’ll say, after knocking out a wall between our kitchen and living room, it’s been way easier to keep an eye on everyone while cooking. Noise does travel more, but we use big rugs and some bookcases as “zones,” which helps a bit. Not for everyone, but it’s worked out for us... even if I do step on Legos more often now.

Totally agree on the rug trick—makes a huge difference for sound. One thing that helped us was adding a ceiling-mounted curtain between the play area and TV zone. Not pretty, but it keeps the chaos (and Legos) contained... most of the time.

I get the appeal of curtains for dividing space, but I’ve always wondered if they just end up collecting dust and pet hair? We tried something similar once—hung a heavy canvas drop cloth to split our living/dining area. It did help with noise, but honestly, it felt like we’d just put up a giant dust magnet. Plus, it blocked a lot of natural light, which kind of defeated the open vibe we were going for.
I keep coming back to plants as “soft dividers.” They don’t muffle sound as much as rugs, but a row of tall, leafy ones (we used old wine crates as planters) made a surprising difference in both noise and visual separation. And they’re way easier on the eyes than a curtain, at least for me. Anyone else tried that route, or am I just making excuses to buy more plants?
