I've been trying to figure out a better way to handle my backyard lights. Right now, I've got them on a basic timer, but it's honestly kind of annoying. Like, daylight hours change through the year, and I always forget to adjust the timer...so half the time they're coming on way too early or super late. Plus, sometimes we're out there longer than usual and suddenly boom—darkness.
I've heard about some smart home setups where you can control everything from your phone or even have them automatically adjust based on sunset times or motion sensors. Sounds kinda cool but also maybe overkill? I'm not exactly tech-savvy, and I don't wanna spend hours troubleshooting some glitchy app just to turn on some string lights, you know?
Anyway, curious if anyone's tried this sorta thing. Is it worth it or am I better off sticking with the old-school timer?
I've set up a smart switch with sunset/sunrise scheduling—honestly, way less hassle than timers. Pretty much set-and-forget. Have you thought about motion sensors too, or is that too sensitive for your setup?
Totally agree on the sunset/sunrise scheduling—made my life way easier too. Motion sensors can be a bit tricky, honestly. I set some up last summer thinking it'd be perfect for when we step out for a quick BBQ or to let the dog out... but turns out, every squirrel and stray cat in the neighborhood loved triggering them at 3am. Not exactly ideal.
What did work surprisingly well for me was combining the smart scheduling with a couple of low-cost solar lights that have built-in motion detectors. I placed those strategically along the path and near the gate—basically anywhere someone would actually walk. They're sensitive enough to be useful, but not so sensitive that every leaf blowing by sets them off.
If you're considering motion sensors, might help to start small—test one or two first, see how it goes. Could save you from my wildlife light-show fiasco, haha.
