Smart lights vs smart switches for yard setup?

Yeah, I’ve run into the same thing—“dimmable” doesn’t always mean smooth dimming, especially with smart switches. Lutron’s been more reliable for me too, though I’ve had a couple of bulbs that still buzz or flicker at low levels. Out of curiosity, have you tried any outdoor-rated smart bulbs? I wonder if the extra weatherproofing affects compatibility. Sometimes I feel like it’s just easier to control the fixture instead of the bulb, but then you lose out on color options... trade-offs everywhere.

I’ve actually tried a couple of outdoor-rated smart bulbs—Philips Hue and some random Amazon brand. Didn’t notice much difference in compatibility, but the Hue ones held up better in the rain. Still, I get what you mean about fixture control being simpler. Color options are fun, but honestly, half the time I just leave them on warm white anyway. The flicker thing drives me nuts though... sometimes I wonder if it’s just the wiring in my house.

Honestly, I lean way more toward smart switches for outdoor setups. Here’s why: bulbs can be finicky with weather, and if one goes out, you’re stuck climbing up to replace it. With a switch, you just use regular outdoor-rated bulbs—cheaper and easier to swap. The flicker thing? That’s often the bulb not playing nice with the switch or dimmer, but sometimes it is old wiring. Had that issue myself until I swapped in a proper smart switch and ditched the “smart” bulbs outside. Never looked back... color options are cool, but for yard lights, I just want them to work every time.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had better luck with smart bulbs outside—at least for accent lighting. The color options are a big deal for me, especially around the holidays or if I’m hosting something. I do agree, though, that switches are less hassle if you just want basic on/off. For me, it’s a trade-off: a little more maintenance for more flexibility. Guess it depends on how much you care about the “fun” factor versus just reliability.

I get the appeal of the color options—my neighbors go all out with those during Halloween and Christmas, looks great. But I’ve had a few smart bulbs outside and honestly, they just didn’t hold up for me long-term. Water got in, or the app would glitch, that kind of thing.

“a little more maintenance for more flexibility”
—that’s the trade-off, alright. I just got tired of troubleshooting when I’d rather be working on other projects. Ever run into issues with connectivity or weather messing with yours?
