Getting the right shade: do you eyeball it or bring a sample?
Discussion options
Quick poll - when you’re trying to match a paint color at the store, do you just wing it from memory, or do you actually bring in a chip or something? I always think I’ll remember, but then I get home and it’s totally off. Curious what most people do…

I learned the hard way that my memory is garbage when it comes to paint colors. I always think, “Yeah, I’ll remember that shade of blue,” and then I get home and it’s basically Smurf vs. navy. Now I just chip off a little piece (or swipe a sample card) and bring it in. The lighting in stores messes with my brain too, so having the real thing helps a ton.
Yeah, I hear you. I used to think I had an eagle eye for matching colors - turns out, I was just optimistic. One time I swore I’d found the perfect sage green, got home, and it looked like a hospital hallway. Now I always bring an actual sample piece, even if it means prying off a tiny chip. The store lights really do mess with your perception... it’s wild how different something can look in your own space. You’re definitely not alone in this.
I totally get that - store lighting is like some kind of optical illusion trap. I once picked a “warm gray” that turned lavender in my living room. Now I’m the person awkwardly holding up random objects to the paint wall, just in case. You’re not alone in the color struggle... it’s basically a rite of passage, right?
Honestly, the lavender thing is too real - colors just morph under different lights. I’ve tried taking a pic on my phone, but that’s not much better. Now I just toss whatever I’m matching in my bag, even if it’s a weird chunk of drywall. Nobody at the store even blinks anymore.
