How much upkeep do permeable pavers need to keep draining?
Permeable pavers let stormwater pass through open joints into an open-graded base, while conventional pavers generally have tighter joints and rely more on surface grading to manage runoff. How much does the soil below affect whether a permeable system makes sense? If it infiltrates slowly or stays seasonally saturated, does the design need an overflow route or other provisions? And how much work does replenishing joint aggregate add compared with maintaining a conventional patio? I’d be interested in how people weigh the drainage goal against site conditions and upkeep.

Slow infiltration doesn’t automatically rule out permeable pavers. The base can be designed to store runoff temporarily and release it through a controlled outlet rather than relying on full infiltration. That requires a feasible outlet and storage sized for the site; without those, conventional paving with surface grading may be more practical.
