Haha, cardboard under mulch is genius—why didn't I think of that sooner? I've been battling weeds with newspaper for ages, and let's just say... it hasn't exactly been a winning strategy. Ever had to chase down soggy newspaper bits after a windy rainstorm? Not my idea of weekend fun.

But seriously, good call on the tape thing. I once used some old Amazon boxes without thinking, and months later, I was still pulling out those little plastic packing slips. Who knew cardboard could haunt you like that?

Anyway, your space sounds awesome now. Isn't it weirdly satisfying when something so simple actually works out? Makes me wonder what other random household items I've overlooked that could save me money (and sanity) in the yard.

Been there, done that—never again. I switched to cardboard last summer after a similar newspaper fiasco. But heads up: avoid cereal boxes or anything glossy. Learned the hard way they don't break down well and just end up as colorful mulch confetti. Still, cardboard's a game changer overall. Crazy how the simplest hacks can save hours of frustration...and sanity.

Cardboard's definitely a step up from newspaper, but honestly, I've found burlap sacks to be even better. Got the idea from a client who swore by them for weed control and moisture retention. I was skeptical at first—seemed too simple—but now I'm hooked. They stay put in wind and rain, break down nicely over time, and actually look pretty decent once you toss some mulch or gravel on top.

Funny story though: first time I tried it at home, my dog thought I'd laid out a new outdoor bed just for him...came outside to find him sprawled out like royalty. Took some convincing (and treats) to reclaim my garden space.

Have you tried burlap yet, or are you sticking with cardboard for now?

I've been using cardboard mostly because it's always around after deliveries, but now you've got me curious about burlap. Does it hold up well enough if you're walking over it regularly? I have a path area that's always getting muddy, and cardboard just turns into mush there. Wondering if burlap might be sturdier for foot traffic...

Burlap might hold up slightly better than cardboard, but honestly, in my experience, it still breaks down pretty quickly under regular foot traffic—especially when wet. Have you considered wood chips or gravel instead? They're affordable and handle mud way better long-term.
