I get what you mean about “lived-in” charm, but I’ve actually found myself drawn to more neutral, staged spaces—especially when I was house-hunting. Sometimes all the personal touches just make it harder for me to picture my own stuff fitting in, you know? There’s a line between cozy and cluttered, and I’m never sure where it is. Maybe it depends on the buyer, or maybe I’m just nervous about making bold choices in my own place.

Totally get this—sometimes I walk into a place and can’t tell if it’s “lived-in” or just needs a good declutter. When I’m fixing up spaces, I stick to:

- Neutral walls, but add one or two bold accents you can swap out (think throw pillows, not tile).
- Personal touches = great for living, not always for selling. That gallery wall of family photos? Maybe box it up for showings.
- If you’re nervous about bold choices, try peel-and-stick stuff first. Worst case, you just peel it off.

Honestly, half the time my own house looks like a hardware store exploded... so maybe don’t take *all* my advice.

That line gets blurry fast, especially when you’ve got pets, kids, or just…life happening. I walk into homes all the time where people apologize for the “mess,” but honestly, sometimes the so-called clutter is what makes it feel like someone actually lives there.

A few things I look for when trying to avoid that cluttered vibe:

- Surfaces: If every flat spot has something on it—mail, keys, candles, random decor—it starts feeling busy. Try clearing off one or two spots completely and see how it changes the room.
- Storage: Open shelving looks great in magazines, but in real life? Dust magnets and visual chaos unless you keep things super organized. Closed cabinets hide a multitude of sins.
- Traffic flow: If you’re bumping into stuff or have to sidestep baskets/toys/whatever, it’s probably crossed into clutter territory.

I know people love their gallery walls (and hey, they can look awesome), but I’ve seen them turn a small room into a visual maze. Sometimes less is more. That said, personal touches do make a place feel like home—you just want to avoid every inch being covered.

One thing I’ll push back on from your list: neutral walls are safe, yeah, but sometimes a bold paint color can actually make a space feel tidier because it distracts from the little messes. Plus, paint’s not that hard to change if you regret it later.

I’ve been guilty of leaving tools out mid-project for weeks and calling it “work in progress.” Maybe that’s my version of lived-in... or maybe I’m just messy. Either way, there’s no perfect formula—just gotta find what feels right for you (and maybe clear off that kitchen counter once in a while).

Couldn’t agree more. I tried open shelves to “save money” and just ended up with piles of random stuff and dust. Switched to cheap cabinets—way less stress. Sometimes practical wins over pretty.

Yeah, open shelves are one of those things that look killer in a staged photo, but in real life? Unless you’re Marie Kondo-level tidy, it’s just not practical. I tried to make it work in my last kitchen—thought I’d love seeing all my dishes out. Instead, I spent more time dusting than cooking. If anyone’s still set on open shelves, I’d say limit them to stuff you use every day (so it doesn’t get dusty) and stash the rest behind doors. Cabinets might not be “trendy,” but man, they save your sanity.
