Paper tape’s definitely more forgiving, especially if you’re a bit of a perfectionist about seams. I’ve gone back and forth with mesh, but I always end up regretting it on those longer joints.

Those vacuum sanders are like wrestling an octopus... not worth the hassle in my book.
Couldn’t agree more—tried one once and it was chaos. Curious, have you ever used one of those corner tools for taping inside corners? I find them handy but sometimes they just make more of a mess than they fix...

I’ve tried those corner tools a couple times, but honestly, I’m not convinced they’re worth the hype. The first time I used one, I ended up with more compound on the floor than in the corner. Maybe it’s just me being clumsy, but I feel like a regular taping knife gives me more control, even if it takes longer.

Has anyone actually gotten a super clean finish with those things? Or is it just one of those “looks easy on YouTube” situations? Also, what about sanding inside corners—do you guys use those foam sanding blocks or just fold sandpaper? I keep getting little ridges no matter what I try.

Yeah, I’ve had a similar experience with those corner tools—mine just turned into a sloppy mess. Honestly, folding sandpaper works better for me too, even if my fingers end up cramped. Maybe it’s just one of those things that takes a ton of practice... or maybe YouTube folks have magic hands?

Same here—those fancy corner tools just collect dust in my toolbox. I tried one of those “ergonomic” ones and it still left the corners looking rough. Folding sandpaper is cheap and gets the job done, even if my hands hate me after. I swear, half the stuff on YouTube looks way easier than it actually is. Maybe they edit out all the cursing and hand cramps...

Yeah, I hear you. Those corner gadgets always seem like a good idea until you’re actually trying to get into a tight spot and the thing just bounces around or misses the edge entirely. I’ve got a drawer full of “innovative” tools that promised to save my wrists—most of them just gather dust now.

Here’s what’s worked for me: fold a piece of sandpaper in thirds, so it’s stiff enough to hold its shape but flexible enough to get into corners. If you need a sharper edge, wrap it around a paint stir stick or even an old credit card. Not glamorous, but it gets right up to the joint without gouging the wall. I’ll admit, after a couple hours my fingers are toast, but at least the finish looks clean.

YouTube definitely skips over the part where you’re hunched over, swearing at the baseboards. Real life DIY is way messier than those five-minute clips make it look...
