Been thinking lately, say you did some remodeling on your house, nothing huge, just knocking down a wall or two, maybe adding a bathroom...and you didn't bother getting permits. Hypothetically, if the city finds out later, what kinda trouble are you looking at?
Honestly, it's not usually as scary as people make it sound. I've seen plenty of homeowners who've done small remodels without permits and never had an issue. But... if the city does find out, you're probably looking at fines and maybe having to open up walls for inspections. Worst case, they could ask you to redo some work to meet code, but that's pretty rare unless it's something major or unsafe.
A friend of mine added a bathroom without permits a few years back. City found out when he went to sell the house. He had to pay a fine and get it inspected after the fact, but it wasn't a huge dealβjust a bit of hassle and extra cost. So don't lose sleep over it, but if you're worried, you can always talk to your local building department anonymously and see what they say.
