- Been there with the “it’s just a drip” turning into a weekend project and a trip to the hardware store.
- I’m all about the DIY checks—flashlight, paper towel, quick sniff test for musty smells.
- That said, I did get burned once by a slow leak I missed behind the dishwasher... ended up replacing subfloor.
- Pro inspections feel pricey, but after that fiasco, I’ll spring for one every couple years.
- Honestly, if you’re handy and keep an eye out, you can catch most stuff before it gets ugly. Just don’t ignore weird noises or water spots—those are never “nothing.”

I get the urge to DIY—most leaks are easy enough to spot if you’re paying attention. But honestly, some of the worst stuff I’ve seen is what’s hidden behind walls or under floors, and that’s not something a flashlight or sniff test will catch. Even handy folks miss things. Pro inspections can feel like overkill, but sometimes they catch stuff way before it becomes a nightmare job. Just depends how much risk you’re willing to take, I guess...

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve chased down a “simple” leak before, only to open up a wall and find out it’d been dripping for ages—mold city, warped studs, the whole nine yards. I love figuring things out myself, but there’s just stuff you can’t see without the right tools or experience. Sometimes I’ll do a first pass, but if something feels off, I don’t mess around. Water damage is sneaky and expensive... learned that one the hard way.

Man, I totally get the anxiety around hidden leaks. I’m in the middle of my first reno and every time I open up a wall, I half expect to find some ancient plumbing disaster. It’s wild how much damage water can do before you even notice anything on the surface. I’m all for trying things myself, but yeah, sometimes it just feels safer to call in someone who knows what they’re looking for. No shame in that—better than dealing with a moldy mess down the line.

Honestly, I’ve had that same sinking feeling opening up walls—like, what ancient horrors am I about to unleash? Sometimes you just gotta admit defeat and call in the pros. Water damage is sneaky... and expensive if you miss it. I’d rather spend a little now than a lot later.
