- If you can see daylight through the foundation vents, check if there’s any kind of plywood sheathing on the short walls (cripple walls). If it’s just open studs, that’s a weak point. I ended up cutting and screwing in 1/2" plywood panels between the studs—took a weekend, but it’s supposed to help a lot with lateral movement.
- Look for anchor bolts along the mudsill (the wood that sits right on the concrete). If you don’t see big bolts every 4-6 feet, that’s a red flag. I had to drill and epoxy in some Simpson anchors myself. Not the most fun job, but not rocket science either.
