Honestly, I’ve tried going all-digital to save time, but I always end up back with my notepad. It’s just cheaper and way easier to scribble out a quick measurement or idea without worrying about battery life or learning some new app. That said, when it comes to sharing with contractors, yeah, digital wins—no more “what does this chicken scratch say?” moments. Still, for me, pen and paper keeps costs down and my sanity intact.

- Totally get the notepad thing—sometimes my best ideas happen when I’m doodling in the margins.
- But man, I’ve lost so many sticky notes it’s not even funny.
- Digital’s great for sharing, but I still end up snapping pics of my paper sketches and texting them to contractors... not exactly high-tech.
- Anyone else ever spill coffee on their plans and just hope the stain looks “intentional”?

Coffee stains on plans? Been there—honestly, sometimes I think it adds character. Your process sounds a lot like what happens on my end, too: half digital, half scribbled notes and sketches. For what it’s worth, there’s no “wrong” way to brainstorm. If snapping pics of your doodles works, keep doing it. I’ve tried all-digital but always end up back with a pencil in hand. Maybe it’s just how some of us work best.

I totally get what you mean about ending up with a pencil in hand—there’s just something about the feel of sketching ideas out that digital apps can’t quite match for me. But I do like how easy it is to tweak things on a tablet, especially when clients want changes last minute. Do you ever find it tricky to keep track of all your paper notes, or have you figured out a good system for organizing them? Sometimes my desk looks like a tornado hit it...

Honestly, I’ve tried every “system” under the sun to keep my paper sketches organized—binders, folders, even color-coded sticky notes. But no matter what, I end up with a pile of half-finished floor plans and measurements scattered everywhere. The thing is, I actually like that chaos sometimes. When I’m knee-deep in a reno, flipping through old sketches can spark ideas I’d forgotten about. There’s something about seeing all those scribbles and margin notes that just doesn’t happen with digital files.

That said, I get the appeal of digital for last-minute changes. But I’ve had a few close calls where a tablet crashed or a file didn’t save right, and suddenly I’m scrambling to remember what version was the latest. At least with paper, it’s all right there in front of me—even if it looks like a disaster zone. Maybe it’s just habit at this point, but I kind of trust my messy desk more than an app sometimes...
