Okay, I thought installing this Nest thermostat would be easy-peasy but um... turns out wiring isn't really my strong suit. Got some weird extra wires hanging around and now I'm second-guessing myself. Anybody dealt with this before?
Haha, been there myself—Nest makes it look so simple until you open up the wall and find a spaghetti mess of wires. Did you happen to snap a pic of your old thermostat wiring before you disconnected everything? That usually saves a ton of headaches later. Also, are any of those extra wires labeled or color-coded? Sometimes HVAC techs leave unused wires tucked away for future upgrades, so you might not even need them. When I installed mine, I had this random blue wire that didn't match anything in the instructions... turned out it was just an extra common wire someone ran years ago "just in case." If you're really stuck, Nest's website has a wiring compatibility checker—have you tried plugging your setup into that yet? Might clear things up.
Yeah, Nest's compatibility checker is decent, but honestly, I've found it oversimplifies things sometimes. When I did mine, the wiring colors were all over the place—red wire wasn't even power. Had to trace everything back to the furnace board... fun times. Did you check your HVAC panel yet?
