Good point about angling the vents downward—I overlooked that initially and had some minor water intrusion myself. One thing I'd add is that vent covers or screens can make a big difference too. I installed some inexpensive mesh screens on mine, and they've kept out debris and insects without restricting airflow noticeably. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most effective...and budget-friendly, thankfully.

Totally agree about the mesh screens—those little guys are lifesavers. I went for stainless steel ones myself after some plastic ones warped in the sun. No critters or leaves since, and airflow's still great. Small upgrades can really pay off, right?

Had a similar experience when we upgraded the vents on a client's storm shelter a while back. They initially went with plastic because of cost, but after just one summer, those things warped badly and let in all sorts of debris. Switched them out for stainless steel mesh screens and haven't had issues since. It's amazing how a small detail can make such a noticeable difference in maintenance and airflow quality... definitely worth the investment in my book.

Couldn't agree more on this. It's tempting to cut corners when budgets get tight, but man, plastic vents are just asking for trouble. Learned that lesson the hard way myself flipping a property last year—thought I'd save a few bucks, ended up with warped vents and a weekend spent cleaning out leaves and junk. Stainless steel mesh was a game changer. Glad your shelter passed inspection smoothly, always a relief when things finally come together right.

Totally get what you're saying about plastic vents—been there, regretted that. Stainless steel mesh really is worth every cent, especially if you're dealing with older homes like mine. I'm curious though, did you add any extra waterproofing or drainage features to your shelter? I've been debating whether that's overkill or just smart planning, considering how unpredictable storms have gotten lately...
