How do you use infrared imaging and a smoke pencil together when wind, the indoor-outdoor temperature difference, or room pressure could change what each one shows?

The smoke pencil seems more direct for spotting air movement, while the camera can point out temperature patterns worth investigating. If they suggest different locations, what follow-up observation helps confirm an actionable air leak without treating the image alone as proof?

I’m comparing scopes for sealing ductwork in an accessible attic or crawlspace before replacing insulation. The main question is whether targeted sealing at visible duct joints is worth paying for now, or whether it makes more sense to pursue broader testing and air-sealing work first.

For a quote, I’d want the contractor to separate:

- Duct-joint sealing, including the sealing method and number of accessible joints
- Any damaged or missing duct insulation
- Duct replacement, if a section is actually deteriorated rather than merely leaky
- Leakage testing before and after the work
- Extra charges for tight access, long runs, or contaminated areas

What cost range have others seen for this type of work? I’m less interested in a whole-house attic air-sealing estimate and more in the labor and materials for accessible duct joints.

I’d also like to know what symptoms justify professional testing. If only a couple of rooms have weak airflow or unusual temperature differences, does that point toward duct leakage or restriction in those runs? Conversely, if airflow and comfort are generally fine, is visual sealing of obvious joints usually enough to do before insulation, or is testing still worthwhile?

I’m trying to avoid paying to replace every duct when targeted sealing would address the problem, but I also don’t want to bury a significant leak under new insulation.

Okay, random thought hit me today while I was watching some documentary about animals seeing in infrared. Imagine waking up one morning and suddenly you see the world in heat signatures instead of normal colors. Like, your coffee mug glowing bright orange, your cat curled up like a little warm blob on the couch, and your neighbor's house suspiciously warmer than everyone else's (hmm, what's he up to?).

You'd probably start noticing all sorts of weird stuff - like leaks in insulation around your windows, overheating electronics, or maybe even figure out who's been secretly stealing your lunch at work (gotcha, Dave!). But seriously, it'd be kinda overwhelming, wouldn't it? Trying to navigate everyday life with heat vision sounds cool at first, but then you'd probably miss seeing regular colors pretty quick.

Anyway, just got me thinking - what would you guys do if you woke up tomorrow seeing only heat? Would it be a superpower or just a huge inconvenience?

Been living in this older home for about 8 years now, and every winter I swear the heating bills get higher and higher. Last year was brutal, you know, with the drafts coming through windows and doors. I've done some basic DIY stuff - weather stripping around doors, plastic film over windows - but honestly, it feels like I'm just putting band-aids on a bigger problem.

So lately I've been thinking about getting the whole place properly insulated and sealed up. Thing is, I have no clue what kind of money we're talking about here. It's an older house (built in the early 50s), not huge but decent-sized - around 1,800 sq ft - and I'm guessing there's probably next to no insulation left in the walls or attic at this point.

I tried googling around a bit but got overwhelmed pretty quick - some sites say it's affordable and pays for itself fast, others make it sound like I'll need to take out a second mortgage just to keep warm. Plus, seems like prices vary wildly depending on where you live and who you hire.

Has anyone here done a full insulation/weatherization job recently? Like attic insulation, sealing air leaks, maybe even wall insulation? If so, how much did it end up costing you roughly? Was it worth it in terms of energy savings or comfort? Or did you regret spending that much cash?

I'm kinda stuck between wanting to finally fix this issue properly and being worried it'll cost way more than I can handle right now. Any advice or personal experiences would be super helpful...

I was reading something pretty interesting yesterday about how much heat actually escapes through tiny gaps and cracks around windows and doors. Apparently, even a small gap around your window frame can let out as much heat as leaving a window wide open a couple inches. Crazy, right? I mean, I always knew drafts were bad, but didn't realize it was THAT bad.

Anyway, got me thinking about all the little things we can do to keep our places warmer without cranking up the thermostat and watching our heating bills skyrocket. Last year, I tried that plastic shrink-wrap stuff you put over windows with a hairdryer - honestly thought it was gonna be gimmicky, but it actually worked pretty well. My living room felt noticeably warmer, and my bill dropped a bit too.

Also heard from a friend that heavy curtains or thermal drapes can make a huge difference. She swears by them, says her bedroom stays way warmer at night now. I'm thinking of giving those a shot this year.

Another thing I stumbled across was weather stripping tape - cheap and easy to apply around doors and windows. Seems like a no-brainer, but I've never actually tried it myself. Anyone here used it before? Curious if it's worth the effort or if it's just another one of those things that sounds good in theory but doesn't really pan out.

Oh, and here's something kinda funny: apparently bubble wrap taped to windows is supposed to be an effective insulator too. Sounds weirdly satisfying to me...though I'd probably end up popping all the bubbles by February, lol.

Anyway, just thought I'd share since winter's creeping up fast again. If anyone else has some clever tricks or random trivia about keeping warm on the cheap, I'm all ears!
