I was reading something pretty interesting yesterday about how much heat actually escapes through tiny gaps and cracks around windows and doors. Apparently, even a small gap around your window frame can let out as much heat as leaving a window wide open a couple inches. Crazy, right? I mean, I always knew drafts were bad, but didn't realize it was THAT bad.
Anyway, got me thinking about all the little things we can do to keep our places warmer without cranking up the thermostat and watching our heating bills skyrocket. Last year, I tried that plastic shrink-wrap stuff you put over windows with a hairdryerβhonestly thought it was gonna be gimmicky, but it actually worked pretty well. My living room felt noticeably warmer, and my bill dropped a bit too.
Also heard from a friend that heavy curtains or thermal drapes can make a huge difference. She swears by them, says her bedroom stays way warmer at night now. I'm thinking of giving those a shot this year.
Another thing I stumbled across was weather stripping tapeβcheap and easy to apply around doors and windows. Seems like a no-brainer, but I've never actually tried it myself. Anyone here used it before? Curious if it's worth the effort or if it's just another one of those things that sounds good in theory but doesn't really pan out.
Oh, and here's something kinda funny: apparently bubble wrap taped to windows is supposed to be an effective insulator too. Sounds weirdly satisfying to me...though I'd probably end up popping all the bubbles by February, lol.
Anyway, just thought I'd share since winter's creeping up fast again. If anyone else has some clever tricks or random trivia about keeping warm on the cheap, I'm all ears!
