We're finally replacing our ancient windows (drafty as heck, you know the type), and I'm stuck on what framing to choose. Wood seems classic but maybe too much maintenace? Vinyl sounds easy to care for, but I've heard mixed things about durability and looks. Aluminum...um, does anyone even do aluminum anymore or is that totally outdated? Curious what others went with and if you're happy with it.

I've installed all three types over the years, and honestly, aluminum isn't totally dead—it's just more niche these days. Had a client recently who went with aluminum frames for their modern-style home. They loved the sleek look, and durability-wise, they're pretty solid. But yeah, they can get cold in winter climates unless you opt for thermal breaks. Vinyl's come a long way too, though I still think wood has unmatched charm if you're willing to put in the upkeep. Are you leaning more toward aesthetics or low maintenance?

Glad someone mentioned aluminum frames still having their place. Did a reno last year with aluminum windows—modern build, minimalist vibe—and they turned out great. Yeah, thermal breaks are a must in colder areas, but totally worth it for that sleek look. Wood's charming, sure, but practicality wins for me every time.
