Dealing with city red tape for building approvals

Yeah, it can feel like a total toss-up sometimes. One time, I had an inspector who literally just glanced at my insulation and signed off, then the next round, a different guy wanted to see every single fastener and double-check my VOC-free caulk labels. It’s wild how much it varies. Honestly, I’ve found keeping super-detailed records and photos helps - if they ask for proof or specs, you’ve got it right there. Doesn’t fix the randomness, but at least you’re covered when someone gets picky. Hang in there; once you get through the maze, it’s worth it.

That’s been my experience too - total luck of the draw. Had one guy measure stud spacing with a tape, another barely looked up from his phone. I started keeping a binder with receipts and photos after getting burned once on a missing spec sheet. It’s a pain, but better than having to rip stuff out later.

Honestly, I get why people keep binders and all that, but sometimes I wonder if we’re just making it harder on ourselves. I’ve had a couple inspectors who actually seemed annoyed when I handed them a stack of paperwork - they just wanted to see the work and move on. Maybe it depends on the city or even the mood they’re in that day? I almost feel like over-preparing can backfire, but then again, you never know who you’ll get...

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve had days where I lugged around a binder thinking I was being super prepared, and the inspector barely glanced at it. Other times, they wanted every single doc in order. It really does seem to depend on who you get and what kind of day they’re having. I figure it’s better to have too much than not enough, but yeah, sometimes it feels like overkill. At least when you’re over-prepared, you don’t get caught off guard... even if it means carrying around a small library.

Couldn’t agree more - being over-prepared has saved me more than once. I’ve found it helps to keep digital copies handy too. Sometimes inspectors are fine with photos or PDFs on a tablet, which saves my back and keeps things organized. Still, there’s always that one who wants paper originals... guess it’s just part of the game.
