I hear you on the paper mess. I used to swear by my old spiral notebook—thought it was foolproof until I left it on the hood of my car and watched it tumble down the driveway in the rain... Not my finest hour. Switched to Google Keep for quick notes and photos, then I’ll organize everything in a spreadsheet when I get home. It’s not perfect, but at least I’m not chasing soggy receipts anymore. The trick for me is snapping pics of everything—paint cans, serial numbers, even wall measurements. That way, if I forget something at the store, it’s right there in my pocket.

Losing stuff in the rain is the worst—been there with a stack of receipts that turned into papier-mâché in my glovebox. I’ve tried using my phone for notes and photos too, but sometimes I get paranoid about losing everything if my phone dies or glitches out. Do you ever worry about that? I keep thinking maybe I should back things up somewhere else, but then it feels like double the work.

Also, how do you keep your photos organized? Mine end up mixed in with random family pics and memes, and then I’m scrolling forever trying to find the right paint code. Is there a trick to keeping renovation stuff separate without having to set up a whole new app? I’m all for saving money and time, but sometimes it feels like digital clutter is just as bad as paper clutter... or am I overthinking it?

Totally get what you mean about digital clutter feeling just as overwhelming as paper. I’ve lost track of receipts and notes both ways. I do worry about my phone dying, but honestly, I just email myself important stuff—photos, lists, whatever—so at least it’s somewhere else if my phone crashes. For photos, I started making albums in my phone’s gallery app called “Renovation” or “Paint Codes,” nothing fancy. It’s not perfect, but it beats scrolling through memes and cat pics every time I need a reference. Feels like overkill to use a whole new app for it, unless you’re super organized... which I’m definitely not.

I totally relate to the endless scroll through random screenshots and memes just to find a paint swatch photo. I used to keep a physical folder with fabric samples and paint chips, but it got so bulky. Now I snap pics and drop them in a “Project” album too, but sometimes I forget what’s what... Ever tried labeling photos right after you take them? I’ve found it helps when I’m juggling five shades of white that all look identical on my phone. Curious if anyone’s found a way to keep track of actual samples—like, do you still keep physical swatches or just trust your phone now?

Title: Keeping track of renovation plans without losing your mind

I still keep a tiny stash of physical swatches, but only for the “big” choices—like main wall paint or sofa fabric. Everything else goes digital. Here’s what’s saved my sanity: after snapping a pic, I use the phone’s markup tool to scribble the brand and color right on the photo. It’s not pretty, but at least I don’t mix up “Alabaster” and “Snowbound” for the hundredth time... The trick is forcing myself to do it in the moment, which is honestly harder than picking a paint color.
