I hear you on the photos—those have bailed me out more than once, especially with cabinet hinges and drawer slides. I’ve also started tossing hardware into labeled zip bags as I go. Not fancy, but it beats digging through a pile of random bolts later.
Those little zip bags are lifesavers. I used to just pile everything in an old coffee tin—thought I’d remember what went where. Nope. Ended up with a leftover hinge and no clue where it belonged. Now I label everything, even if it feels overkill… way less stressful when it’s time to put things back together.
I’ve been there—thought I’d just “remember” where that weird little bracket went, and then spent an hour cursing myself later. Zip bags are genius, but I’ll admit, sometimes I just use masking tape and scribble notes right on the parts. It’s not pretty, but it saves my sanity. Overkill? Maybe, but beats tearing the place apart looking for a mystery screw.
“sometimes I just use masking tape and scribble notes right on the parts. It’s not pretty, but it saves my sanity.”
Masking tape is my new best friend. I tried to “just remember” where everything went during my first attempt at putting together a cabinet—ended up with three screws left over and a door that wouldn’t close. Is there some secret to not losing track of which screw goes where, or is it just trial and error for everyone? Also, does anyone else end up with random leftover bits and wonder if they were ever needed in the first place?
I’ve definitely been there—leftover screws always make me nervous. I started using ziplock bags and labeling them with a Sharpie for each step or section. It’s not fancy, but it beats guessing later. Ever tried snapping quick photos as you go? Sometimes that’s saved me when I forget which hinge goes where...
