Getting city approval: digital applications vs. old-school paperwork

Last time I tried to sign a PDF with my mouse, the city clerk called to ask if my dog had filled out the application. At least with paper forms, my chicken-scratch signature looks vaguely human. Digital’s great for not losing stuff, but my handwriting’s still holding out for the old days...

I know what you mean - using a mouse to sign anything feels like trying to write with your non-dominant hand after five cups of coffee. I’ve had submittals come back because my digital signature looked like a toddler’s doodle. But honestly, I’m grateful for not having to dig through piles of paper anymore. At least with PDFs, I can keep track of all the revisions and resubmit quickly when the city inevitably asks for something different. Still, nothing beats the confidence of putting pen to paper, even if the result isn’t exactly elegant. Maybe one day the tech will catch up, and we’ll all have signatures that don’t look like abstract art…

Totally get that - my “signature” with a mouse looks like I just scribbled a line and called it good. Has anyone tried those phone apps where you sign with your finger? I’m curious if they’re any better, or just as awkward. Also, does anyone else worry the city won’t accept a digital signature if it looks too messy? I always wonder if they actually check or just want something vaguely signature-shaped...

Honestly, I’ve had better luck with a finger on my phone than a mouse, but it still ends up looking like a toddler’s drawing half the time. I don’t think the city cares much - as long as there’s a squiggle in the right spot, they usually process it. Never had one kicked back for being messy. The old-school paperwork was way more of a hassle, honestly.

Totally get this. My “signature” on those digital forms looks like I let my dog do it, but you’re right - the city just wants something in the box. I used to stress about making everything look perfect, but after a few approvals, I realized neatness isn’t their priority.

The old paperwork days were brutal. Printing, scanning, mailing... and then waiting forever to hear back. Now it’s just tap, scribble, submit. Even if it’s messy, at least it’s fast and saves on postage and printer ink (which is crazy expensive). Honestly, I’d rather have a quick squiggle than spend hours fussing over forms.

If it works and saves money or time, that’s a win in my book.
