Been looking into making my attic a bit sturdier since I'm planning to store some heavier stuff up there (boxes of books, holiday decorations, you know the drill). I've seen two main methods pop up: reinforcing the existing joists with plywood or metal brackets, or adding sister beams alongside the current ones. Sistering seems more solid but also more work and cost. Anyone tried either method? Curious which one folks prefer and why.

I went the plywood and brackets route last yearβmostly because sistering seemed like overkill for my needs (just holiday junk and random boxes). It's held up fine so far, but honestly, if you're storing books, I'd lean towards sister beams. Books weigh a ton... learned that the hard way.
