Saw this news story yesterday about a family who renovated their attic into a pretty cool guest suite. Got me thinking about our own attic—right now it's just a dusty old storage mess (and home to a few spiders, lol). Wondering if it’s really doable as a weekend project or if it’s one of those things that looks way easier on TV than reality. Curious if anyone here has tried it or knows someone who did...worth the hassle or nah?
Did a similar project on one of my properties last year—definitely not a weekend thing. Consider insulation, ventilation, permits, and structural support...lots to factor in. Have you checked if your attic meets local building codes for living spaces?
Did something similar a few years back and honestly, the structural stuff caught me off guard. Thought I'd just slap up some drywall and flooring, but nope...ended up sistering joists and reinforcing beams. Permits were a headache too—city inspector had me redo the stairs twice because of headroom clearance. You planning to tackle the structural work yourself or hiring someone?
"Permits were a headache too—city inspector had me redo the stairs twice because of headroom clearance."
Yeah, inspectors can be picky about headroom. When I did my basement, thought I'd breeze through it...ended up reframing half the ceiling. Worth it though, learned a ton and saved some cash doing it myself.
