Honestly, painter’s tape and phone notes are better than nothing, but I’ve found they don’t hold up when you’re elbow-deep in a leak months later. I actually switched to using those little metal key tags with paper inserts—super cheap, and you can swap out the labels if things change. Not as “fancy” as engraved, but way more durable than tape. Plus, they don’t get gross when things get damp under the sink. Just a thought if you’re tired of crawling around trying to read smudged scribbles...

Those key tags are a solid idea. I tried the painter’s tape trick once—thought I was being clever, but six months later, all I found was a sticky blue mess and some faded marker. Ended up guessing which valve was which and, well, let’s just say the laundry room got an unexpected rinse. Haven’t looked back since I started using zip ties and laminated labels. Not pretty, but at least they survive my “weekend” projects that somehow always spill into Monday...

I get the appeal of laminated labels, but I swear by a good ol’ silver Sharpie right on the pipe. Yeah, it’s not pretty, and sure, my handwriting looks like a doctor’s prescription, but at least it doesn’t fall off or turn into goo. Plus, I can scribble updates when I inevitably change my mind about which valve does what... again.

Sharpie on the pipe—classic move. I’ve seen more “permanent” labels turn into mystery goo than I care to admit, especially after a hot shower or two. That said, I’ve had a few clients get creative with color-coded zip ties. Not as easy to update as a scribble, but at least you don’t have to decipher my chicken scratch when you’re hunting for the shutoff at 2am. Still, nothing beats the speed of a marker when you’re knee-deep in fittings and just want to get it done before dinner.

I tried the Sharpie trick once on my basement pipes, thinking I was being clever. Fast forward a year and all I had left was a smudge where “cold” used to be. Ended up tracing the line by hand anyway. I’ve seen those zip ties too, but honestly, I just stick masking tape on and write over it. Not fancy, but at least I can swap it out when things change. Never had a “weekend job” actually finish in one weekend though... always ends up with at least one extra trip to the hardware store.
